Cereal giant Kellogg's takes the RICE out of Rice Krispies over 'changing weather conditions', leaving coeliacs unable to eat them
A box of Rice Krispies bearing an allergen update notice, after Kellogg's reformulation left both Rice Krispies and Coco Pops declaring wheat as a bold allergen, directly affecting coeliac sufferers.
Kellogg's has quietly swapped out actual rice in both Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, replacing it with rice flour and corn flour — and the reformulation now means both cereals contain wheat gluten as a declared ingredient, ruling them out for coeliac sufferers and wheat-allergy patients who could previously eat them safely.
Before the change, both cereals carried only a 'may contain gluten' cross-contamination warning; wheat gluten is now a full ingredient, bolded on pack.
Sales of Rice Krispies were already falling in both value and volume before the recipe change, according to The Grocer's Top Products Survey 2026.
Kellogg's said the rest of its cereal range remains unchanged.
