An Ipsos Mori poll finds 56 per cent of Britons would now vote to rejoin the EU, up four points since May, with opposition falling three points to just 30 per cent. Among likely referendum voters the margin widens to 63-34 in favour of rejoining. Former Tory minister Nick Boles said the results prove Burnham speaks for a majority on Brexit.

Among under-35s, support for rejoining reaches 73 per cent, with even 16 per cent of Reform voters backing a return.

Chancellor John Healey has publicly distanced himself from Burnham, quipping he does not expect to see the UK rejoin the EU 'in his lifetime'.
