The Chancellor is expected to back the London mayor's plan for cross-Channel trains to stop at Stratford International in next week's Budget

The capital would keep more of its business rates under the scheme, money that would otherwise help fund other regions. John Healey could approve the Business Rate Retention Zone in the Budget on October 28, though the Treasury has made no final decision. Lord Sadiq Khan claims the project is nearly 'over the line'. Opening the station to international services is estimated to cost £20m.

Khan has argued that upgrading Stratford beats building a third runway at Heathrow.

The station would need a border post, security checks and a check-in zone.

It opened in 2009 for Eurostar, yet only domestic trains have ever stopped there.
