Chancellor John Healey is to commit £100m of taxpayers' cash to a 'world first' AI lab to fight future pandemics

US tech giants OpenAI and Anthropic will back the AI Biosecurity Lab with up to £200m in model credits. It forms part of a £600m AI package ahead of Wednesday's Budget. A £70m cyber centre is also planned after a PHP flaw knocked 32 government services offline. Full details of the lab's role and remit have yet to emerge.

Another £120m will go to the AI Security Institute, set up by the Tories in 2023.

Healey promises a 'distinctively British' approach to AI that 'doesn't leave workers behind'.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan says the lab will be a 'major new global institution'.
