Chancellor John Healey is to invest £100m of taxpayers' money in a 'world first' AI lab to guard against pandemics

US tech giants OpenAI and Anthropic have pledged up to £200m in AI model credits to back the unit, which will develop medical 'countermeasures' against new pathogens. Healey is expected to confirm the plan in Wednesday's Budget. A further £120m will go to the AI Security Institute, set up by the Conservatives in 2023. AI minister Kanishka Narayan called the lab a 'major new global institution'.

A new £70m centre will use AI to hunt cyber threats to critical infrastructure.

A recent flaw in the PHP programming language knocked 32 government services temporarily offline.

Healey promises a 'distinctively British' approach to AI that 'doesn't leave workers behind'.
