Chancellor John Healey is to unveil a £600m AI package in Wednesday's Budget, vowing it will not 'leave workers behind'
The biggest slice goes on defending Britain against AI threats. A new £100m lab will use AI to detect biological threats, backed by up to £200m in model credits from OpenAI and Anthropic. The AI Security Institute gets an extra £120m, and a new AI Centre of Excellence is planned for Manchester. The pledge lands days after Barclays revealed plans to cut 5,000 jobs in an AI-driven efficiency drive.
The Treasury will spend £10m a year studying how AI will reshape British jobs.
A £60m 'National Cyber Shield' will be set up to boost Britain's cyber-defences.
AI minister Kanishka Narayan warned Britain must avoid repeating the Industrial Revolution's painful transition.
