Chancellor John Healey pledges to slash £800m of 'pointless paperwork' before Budget as Tories accuse Labour of 'killing jobs'

Shadow chancellor Andrew Griffith said 'Labour have finally admitted that endless red tape is hammering businesses'. The Treasury says streamlined reporting rules will save firms £290m and easing burdens on asset managers another £105m. Cutting red tape in home buying is worth £116m. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said it is 'not right that pointless bureaucracy gets in the way' of building a business.

Tariff pauses on more than 250 products are extended a year, saving up to £155m.

Small firms will not have to file profit and loss accounts at Companies House from April 2028.

CBI chief Rain Newton-Smith welcomed the plans but said the test is delivering reform.
