'Character matters': George W. Bush's brother backs Democrat James Talarico over Trump-backed Ken Paxton in tight Texas Senate race

Neil Bush says he has already cast his vote for Talarico, a sharp break from the Republican Party in one of the midterms' key races. He also called Donald Trump's bid to overturn the 2020 election 'an affront'. Talarico has edged Paxton in almost every poll, though only by small margins. A win would make him the first Democrat to take a statewide race in Texas since 1994.

Paxton carries the baggage of a 2023 impeachment, at which he was acquitted.

President Trump is due back in Texas on October 27 to rally for Paxton.

Some GOP operatives warn Trump's presence could hurt their candidates as his approval slides.
