Charles Spencer claims Princess Diana came close to suicide and was courted by a powerful American politician in new book

Earl Spencer's new book reveals Princess Diana contemplated suicide before her love for sons William and Harry pulled her back from the brink. Spencer also claims a senior American politician actively courted Diana and that she considered a future as a US first lady. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward adds further colour, drawing on never-before-seen diary entries from Diana's mother Frances Shand Kydd about how her relationship with the Royal Family soured after the 1997 crash.

Spencer sparked controversy by claiming King Charles sounded 'giddily elated' when he called to tell him Diana had died in Paris.

Seward's upcoming book 'Catherine & Diana' compares the lives and marriages of the two royals and features the previously unseen Shand Kydd diaries.
