Chelsea captain Reece James faces three months out after knee surgery with return not expected until January

Chelsea have confirmed that captain Reece James came through minor knee surgery successfully and will not be fit to return until mid-January, sidelining him for roughly three months. The 26-year-old sustained the knee injury in training on October 9, a day before Chelsea's 5-1 win over Bournemouth, and subsequent assessments determined an operation was required. Manager Xabi Alonso cautioned that the return date is 'before Christmas or after Christmas — we will see', with the club unwilling to rush his recovery.
Across all competitions since the 2019-20 season, James has now been absent for 147 matches — a total that encompasses 11 separate hamstring injuries since December 2020.
The news is a particular blow for Alonso, who had initially hoped the problem would keep James out for only a short period before surgery proved unavoidable.
Chelsea had already been weighing up a January move for a midfielder after their pursuit of Monaco's Lamine Camara broke down on deadline day.
