An intruder wearing only underwear climbed through an open window and crept to the third floor of Dr Idris Evans's Pittsburgh home before attacking the sleeping couple with a kitchen knife. Evans, 46, a paediatric critical care physician and medical director at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, was killed in the assault at around 12:30am on Thursday. His wife survived despite serious injuries and managed to alert their two children, aged eight and 12, who escaped. Elijah Hemingway, 32, has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass.
Evans's wife told police the attacker wore only underwear and claimed to 'be God' during the assault.
Allegheny County police described 'a very violent scene' with broken bedroom furniture and shattered mirrors.
Evans's wife remains in critical condition in hospital after fighting back alongside her husband.
