China's Communist Party leaders vow a tougher corruption crackdown as Xi's last remaining military general is promoted to the Politburo

China's closed-door, four-day leadership summit adopted a resolution declaring that the tasks confronting the party are "increasingly arduous," citing threats to national sovereignty, security and development. Gen. Zhang Shengming, the Central Military Commission's vice chairman, has been elevated to the Politburo, filling the seat left vacant after Xi purged two senior generals — a move that leaves Zhang as the commission's sole military member apart from Xi himself.

The promotion comes roughly a year before Xi is expected to secure a fourth five-year term as party leader.
