Church of England disciplinary process to continue against Bishop of Lincoln, 68, despite his resignation

The Church of England has confirmed that its own complaint process against Stephen Conway will proceed even after his resignation as Bishop of Lincoln, underlining that clergy remain subject to disciplinary procedures regardless of whether they leave their post. Conway, 68, stepped down amid an ongoing Lincolnshire Police investigation into suspicion of sexual assault said to have taken place from 2018 to 2025, following his suspension from ministry in February when he was arrested and bailed under conditions. The see falls vacant on 1 October.
Conway has held the role of Bishop of Lincoln only since 2023, having previously served as Bishop of Ely.
The Suffragan Bishop of Grantham, Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, will remain in post as Acting Bishop of Lincoln until a successor is found.
A Crown Nominations Commission will be brought together 'in due course' to select the next Bishop of Lincoln as the diocese comes to terms with the situation.
