City police hunt a masked gunman in a red tracksuit after a man is shot dead in a Midtown subway station

New York police are searching for a masked gunman in a red tracksuit after a fatal shooting at the 7th Avenue station at 53rd Street. The dispute broke out between two men on the northbound platform shortly after noon on Saturday, spilled onto an E train, and continued back on the platform. The gunman fired a single shot to the victim's chest — the man was reportedly 34 — then headed north on 7th Avenue. The victim was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital; no weapon has been recovered and no arrests have been made.

Witness Hassen Pinchback said of the panic on the platform: 'It was like a stampede.'

A female bystander gave chest compressions, urging the dying man to 'hang in there'.

MTA's Kemper vowed the gunman 'will be caught and should face maximum consequences'.
