Colombia captures Luis Páez Nieto, the alleged Tren de Aragua gang leader wanted by the US

Colombian authorities detained Luis Saúl Pérez Nieto, known by the aliases "Páez" and "Nairobi," in the Fontibón district of Bogotá on Thursday. He is sought by the United States on charges including terrorism, drug trafficking and international arms trafficking. Investigators regard him as the highest-ranking Tren de Aragua figure in Peru and a trusted confidant of the gang's founder, Héctor Guerrero Flores. His arrest came as Colombia's new president Abelardo de la Espriella deepens security cooperation with Washington, and DEA administrator Terry Cole publicly commended Colombian authorities for the operation.

Investigators say Pérez Nieto directed the smuggling of weapons, cocaine, ketamine and other narcotics across Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and the US.

Tren de Aragua originated as a Venezuelan prison gang before expanding throughout Latin America and into the United States, diversifying into murder, extortion, human trafficking and sex trafficking.

'Colombia will not be a refuge or sanctuary for any criminal,' De la Espriella said — 'we will pursue them, capture them and bring them to justice.'
