The Alfred hospital in Melbourne now lists the 65-year-old independent MP for Indi as serious but stable, her first improvement since being airlifted there. Brendan Nugent, 43, of Tarrawingee, is accused of driving a Toyota LandCruiser into her outside her Wangaratta office on Monday. Police say he could face more charges, including attempted murder. His family says they were long-time friends of Haines.

Writings attributed to Nugent range from ancient Chinese philosophy to Grand Theft Auto.

Husband Phil Haines says 'both her heart and her mind are in good shape'.
