Councils have spent over £41 million lowering speed limits in three years as Leicester backs 20mph on 60 more streets

Leicester City Council's new scheme, estimated at £140,000, is due to come into force in spring 2027. It will impose 20mph limits on 21 streets in Saffron — from Attlee Way to The Fairway — and 39 streets in Thurncourt, between Scraptoft Lane and Thurncourt Road. Councillor Geoff Whittle, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said the measures would 'lower the risk of serious collisions'. The council has signalled that additional zones are in the pipeline.
Whittle also said the zones would make 'walking, wheeling and cycling' easier.
Drivers on Nursery Road, Bowhill Grove and Brook Road are among those who will be affected.
The £41 million national figure covers councils across Britain over the past three years.
