Almost half the inmates at HMP Wandsworth in south-west London are foreign nationals, the Independent Monitoring Board has found. The 170-year-old jail holds 60% to 80% more prisoners than it was built for, and winter temperatures inside drop to 12C. Around a third of staff are absent on an average day. The board called conditions 'unsafe, overcrowded, unsanitary and squalid'.

The board warned the heating will keep failing while it is 'patched up in a piecemeal manner'.

Prisoners freed under Labour's early release scheme this month reportedly described the jail as 'awful'.

Daniel Khalife escaped from Wandsworth in 2023 by clinging under a food delivery truck.
