Crumbs: Thousands of Warburtons loaves are strewn across the A1(M) near Durham after a lorry overturns and its driver is hospitalised

Firefighters from Spennymoor and Durham had to cut the driver free from the cab before he was taken to University Hospital of North Durham. The Warburtons HGV smashed through the central reservation on the A1(M) at Bowburn, County Durham, just after 5.14am, closing the motorway in both directions during rush hour. A massive crane was brought in to right the lorry, but the northbound carriageway remains shut this afternoon as barrier repairs continue.
The North East Ambulance Service deployed two hazardous area response teams and an ambulance alongside a double-crewed ambulance and a clinical team leader.
Loaves, packaging and bread trays were scattered across the road surface and grass verges, and crews had to scrape the baked goods off the road.
Traffic delays are still forming in both directions, with the A688 northbound towards the A1 also affected.
