Walter Koenig, who played Russian navigator Ensign Pavel Chekov across the original 1960s Star Trek series and six subsequent films, died of natural causes at his North Hollywood home on Sunday night, aged 90, surrounded by his daughter and niece. George Takei, 89, who played Hikaru Sulu and is now one of the last surviving main cast members alongside Shatner, 95, called Koenig his friend of nearly six decades.

Koenig served as best man at Takei's 2008 wedding, and the two shared a birthday on 14 September.

Takei wrote: 'Walter was more than Chekov — he was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.'

Kim Cattrall, who shared the bridge with Koenig in 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country', added: 'Rest well dear Walter.'
