'Delicious irony': Abdul El-Sayed taunts 'habibi' Vance after winning Michigan's Senate seat to become America's first Muslim senator
"MICHIGAN, WE DID IT!" Abdul El-Sayed celebrates his projected U.S, in a picture posted on X by Fox News.
Abdul El-Sayed, 42, a former Detroit public health official and son of Egyptian immigrants, defeated Republican Mike Rogers with 52.4% of the vote to Rogers' 45.6%, the Associated Press calling the race at 2:27am EST. El-Sayed overcame a campaign in which Trump repeatedly called him "a jihadist" and Rogers' allies portrayed him as a terrorist, as well as a last-minute betrayal by Democratic primary rival Haley Stevens, who endorsed Rogers days before the vote.
El-Sayed told the crowd: 'JD, habibi, there is this delicious irony in the fact that you're constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January.'
To Trump he said: 'Donald, I know you struggle with my name — after JD swears me in in January, you can just call me Senator.'
El-Sayed's win was part of a sweeping Democratic midterm rout that handed the party control of both the House and Senate, dealing a blow to Trump's remaining two years in office.
