Democrat James Talarico flips a Texas Senate seat in a shock US midterm defeat for Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton

The win helped Democrats retake control of the entire US Congress. Talarico will become the Senate's youngest member, replacing John Cornyn, 74, who lost his seat in a bruising GOP primary to the scandal-plagued Paxton.

Elon Musk, who lives in Texas, poured nearly $190 million into Paxton's campaign — and lost.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa also ousted three-term Republican governor Greg Abbott on the same night, becoming the state's first Latina governor.

Talarico and Hinojosa celebrated by heading to a Whataburger drive-through, with Talarico posting: 'First stop post-win: Whataburger.'
