Democrat Haley Stevens turns on Abdul El-Sayed and endorses Republican Mike Rogers two days before the Michigan Senate vote
Haley Stevens, the Democratic congresswoman who narrowly lost August's Michigan Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, stunned party officials on Sunday by appearing alongside Republican Mike Rogers at Detroit's Perfecting Church and formally endorsing him on video, citing El-Sayed's refusal to denounce a pro-Palestinian ad that blamed Israel for high grocery prices. Stevens' chief of staff and additional staff resigned from her office the same morning, with Democrats branding her switch a 'betrayal'.
El-Sayed had told Stevens not to attend a planned unity event with Rep. Jim Clyburn — the snub Stevens says triggered her switch.
Michigan is a must-hold seat for Democrats: losing it would effectively kill their path to Senate control against a 53-47 Republican majority.
El-Sayed dismissed the defection live on the campaign trail: 'At the end of the day, I actually don't think about Haley Stevens.'
