Former North Wales Police detective inspector Emma Gardner, 46, has been jailed for eight months for repeatedly snooping on police files about a nightclub bouncer she had slept with twice. Judge Timothy Petts said she opened the lead harassment case 25 times on 18 days, more than any other case, even her own investigations.

'Even detective inspectors are not above the law,' Judge Timothy Petts said, branding it a gross breach of trust.

Prosecutor Andrew Scott described the underlying complaints as 'tittle-tattle' that never reached CID, where Gardner worked.

Gardner, who joined the force aged 20 in 2000, resigned in August after suspension since November 2022.
