Developer shelves £1.5bn Lewisham homes and shopping centre scheme after 'lack of support' from Green council

The proposed Landsec development site in Lewisham, where 1,744 flats and towers up to 35 storeys won planning approval under the previous Labour council in October 2025.

Landsec says Lewisham Council's administration made clear it could not back the plan for 1,744 flats in south London. Councillors approved the scheme in October 2025, but campaigners attacked it because only 98 homes would be for social rent. Landsec also blamed higher interest rates, soaring build costs and tougher regulation. Work had been due to start next year.

The plan would have demolished the 1970s mall for tower blocks up to 35 storeys.

It also included 661 student rooms and a 23-storey co-living block with 445 homes.

Landsec insists: 'Today's news does not mean that we're leaving Lewisham.'
