Diageo apologises after toxic spill kills thousands of fish in Scottish river

The chemical entered Knockando Burn from Diageo's Cardhu distillery in May. It wiped out fish, birds, eels and frogs along a 2km stretch feeding the River Spey. The Spey Fishery Board warns the burn was 'destroyed' and may need years to heal. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) is still investigating and could pass a report to Crown prosecutors.

Fly fishers say the waterway's salmon population has been wiped out.

Diageo called it 'deeply regrettable' and is discussing a long-term restoration plan.
