Discount chains Aldi and Lidl will face the same land rules as Tesco and Asda in a watchdog crackdown

The Competition and Markets Authority confirmed on Thursday that Aldi, Lidl GB and Lidl NI will be classed as 'large grocery retailers'. The change curbs restrictive covenants and exclusivity deals that stop rivals opening stores nearby. Both discounters had escaped the rules by being classed as 'limited assortment discounters'. Rival grocers argued the pair now wield significant influence over Britain's food market.

Asda, Co-op, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose have obeyed these rules for 15-plus years.

Morrisons, Waitrose and Iceland each wrote to the watchdog backing the move.

Iceland accused Aldi and Lidl of using 'problematic land arrangements at scale'.
