'Disgusting sectarianism': Birmingham council is slammed as chants of 'free Palestine' erupt after a vote to review Israel ties

Birmingham City Council voted 54 to 19 on Tuesday night to launch a six-month review of its financial ties to Israel, with chants of 'free Palestine' erupting from the chamber as the result was declared. The motion, brought by cabinet member for health and social care Nosheen Khalid, calls for a review of both the council's own investments and those held by the West Midlands Pension Fund. Jewish groups warned the move risks fuelling antisemitism and may breach the law.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism called the vote 'morally reprehensible', warning it poured 'fuel on the fire' at a time of record antisemitism levels.
Khalid, who called the result 'historic', argued that 'where money goes, responsibility follows' and said residents should be proud.
The vote follows Labour MPs including Jess Phillips urging the Lib Dem council leader to quit the coalition unless Green members rejected a party motion declaring Zionism a form of racism.
