Cold case investigators have formally closed the killing of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith, confirming Ted Bundy as her murderer through DNA evidence matched to another confirmed Bundy victim, Laura Ann Aime. The announcement came precisely 52 years after Smith's body was discovered in Utah woodland. Summit County Attorney Margaret Olson said the case also bore hallmarks of Bundy's 'pattern, motive, means and opportunity'.

The crucial link between the two Utah teenagers came from Bundy's DNA, drawn from Florida records where he was convicted and executed in 1989.
