Dog owners are urged to start playing firework sounds to their pets now, weeks before Bonfire Night

Guide Dogs has made The National Fireworks Archive available at no charge — a training video compiled from fireworks clips sent in by members of the public. The charity's own research found that 63% of UK dogs — roughly 9.9 million animals — suffer from fireworks anxiety, yet 79% of owners do nothing to prepare, and 35% had no idea that desensitisation was even an option. The initiative grew out of the observation that the typical adult carries seven minutes of fireworks footage on their phone.

Guide Dogs advises starting playback at the lowest possible volume, keeping each session to between two and five minutes.

Haley Andrews, a Guide Dogs expert, said training can avoid 'heartache, expense and disruption'.

Owners wishing to expand the archive can email in their own clips of screechers, Catherine wheels and rockets.
