Drinks giant Diageo says sorry after caustic soda from its distillery killed 'thousands' of fish in a River Spey tributary

The chemical leaked from Diageo's Cardhu Distillery in Knockando, Moray, into Knockando Burn in May. Fly fishers say the burn's salmon population was wiped out. The director of the Spey Fishery Board said a 2km stretch had been 'destroyed' and could take years to recover. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency's investigation is still running and could end with a report to prosecutors.

Fishermen first raised the alarm in April over a white, paint-like substance in Carron Burn.

Diageo says it now has 'updated controls in place' and is planning a long-term restoration.
