Michael Mullins, who led Stretford Grammar School for 17 years, was dragged beneath a black Volvo XC90 for more than a mile before being thrown clear and dying at the roadside, a murder trial has heard.

Simon Richardson, 35, is accused of striking Michael Mullins, 56, as the Stretford Grammar School headteacher cycled home through Altrincham, then fleeing at twice the speed limit with Mullins trapped beneath his Volvo XC90. Richardson travelled 1.3 miles over four and a half minutes, dragging Mullins along the road and leaving a trail of blood before Mullins was found fatally injured close to a hedge in Lymm. Prosecutor Phil Barnes KC told Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court that Richardson was fully aware of what he had done and knew his actions would kill or seriously injure the man beneath his wheels.

Mullins had been wearing an Apple Watch that logged data on his route, speed and heart rate when he left school for home at around 5.30pm on 20 April.

Richardson allegedly stopped at a junction, got out of the vehicle and made two attempts to free Mullins before driving on, weaving across the road and mounting a grass verge.

An ANPR camera captured visible damage to the Volvo's bonnet and windscreen as Richardson drove away — proof, prosecutors say, he 'must have known' he had hit someone.
