Driver who dragged a headteacher under his car for over a mile knowing he was alive is jailed for life

Simon Richardson, 35, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 25 years at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday after murdering headteacher Michael Mullins, 56, who was cycling home from Stretford Grammar School in Trafford. Richardson's Volvo XC90 ran through give-way markers and struck Mullins, dragging him under the vehicle for more than a mile.
Judge Mrs Justice Brenner KC told Richardson he heard Mullins 'moaning for many minutes' and drove on for four-and-a-half minutes knowing his victim was conscious.
Richardson's driving history was described as 'appalling'; his record included previous drink-driving and careless-driving offences, and he has been banned from driving for life.
Witnesses described Richardson as 'tanking it' as he sped through the junction in Altrincham; he stopped briefly to try to dislodge Mullins before driving on regardless.
