Simon Richardson, 35, of no fixed address, was on bail for assaulting an emergency worker when he killed Michael Mullins, 56, on 20 April in Warburton, Greater Manchester. He had been released from prison on remand just months earlier and received only a community order for the emergency worker attack, yet was still awaiting trial for affray, actual bodily harm and cocaine possession when he struck the headteacher's bike.
Richardson had 28 previous convictions, including drink-driving and driving while disqualified, with Judge Mrs Justice Brunner calling his record 'appalling'.
Mullins's widow Sarah told the court: 'My past, present, and future have been brutally and callously torn apart,' as the family branded Richardson a 'true coward'.
Richardson drove on at up to 60mph for more than a mile before reversing over Mullins to dislodge him, causing 'crushing' chest injuries.
