Labour is accused of 'surrendering' to parking firms after it rejects a lower limit and caps penalties at £100
Prime Minister Andy Burnham's new code leaves the maximum private parking charge at £100, rejecting calls for a reduction. Consumer body Which? said the long-overdue rules fall well short of what drivers need to fight back against parking 'cowboys'. Private firms issued a record 16.9 million charges in the year to March 2026, a 360 per cent rise since 2015/16. The code is due before Parliament today, with no start date set.
Drivers will have five minutes to decide on parking and ten minutes to leave once they have done so.
One Derby woman faced a £1,906 court claim for taking over five minutes to pay.
Firms that ignore the code risk losing access to DVLA keeper data.
