Met Office forecaster Craig Snell warned of a "big flip in the weather" as high pressure moves in across the UK after a devastating storm double-bill. Dense, stubborn fog is set to develop overnight into Thursday across central and southern England, with East Anglia facing the worst conditions and some patches potentially lingering until lunchtime. According to deputy chief forecaster Steven Keates, high pressure will "ease the winds and bring a quieter and largely drier end to the week for many."

Storms Austen and Boelo killed three people: Richard Baines, 60, in Dumfries and Galloway and a man in his 20s in Finchley were both struck by falling trees.

A woman in her 50s was swept from the sea off the Isle of Wight while walking her dog and died — her dog survived.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill warned fog could "cause some problems on the road" during the Thursday morning rush hour.
