Dense fog smothered central and southern England on Friday morning, dragging visibility below 100 metres across 28 areas stretching from Lincolnshire through the East Midlands and Home Counties to London's fringes. Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick warned the foggy conditions are "set to continue as we creep our way closer towards Halloween." The AA cautioned drivers against depending on automatic headlights alone and advised them to leave greater stopping distances.

The yellow warning covered areas near Stansted and Heathrow airports, though neither reported flights affected.

Saturday may see early morning mist and fog return, potentially persisting as low cloud for much of the day.

Eastern parts of England face the highest risk, with rural spots potentially not seeing fog clear until late afternoon.
