Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said visibility in the worst-hit areas fell under 100 metres, with the yellow warning in place across most of England and parts of Wales until 10am, although fog persisted in some locations into the afternoon. Travellers were advised to leave extra time for journeys, switch on fog lights and check whether their flights had been cancelled.

The warning applied to the East Midlands, East of England, London, the South East, North West, South West, Yorkshire, West Midlands and five Welsh counties.

The fog came in the wake of storms Austen and Boelo, which made it England's rainiest week since October 2024, with gusts of close to 80mph measured on the Isle of Wight.

Calmer, drier weather is forecast before Bonfire Night, but building high pressure will worsen drought conditions that have already had a grip on southern England for several months.
