Michael Rose, a driving instructor, was travelling on the A3 at Wisley, Surrey, when he saw a runaway horse on the carriageway's outside lane at around 7.35am on Tuesday. He pulled his van alongside the animal to act as a barrier. A recovery truck driver also stopped, and between them they kept the horse at the roadside until emergency services reached the scene. Police, ambulance and fire crews then closed the road and moved the horse to a service station nearby.

A separate three-vehicle crash occurred on the A3 during the incident, sending one person to hospital with minor injuries.

Rose warned the scene 'could easily have ended in a fatality for either the horse or a motorist' after watching drivers attempt to overtake the animal.

Surrey Police offered the horse apples and salad after it was safely removed from the carriageway.
