John Lewis's 20th Christmas ad, 'Gloria and Pickles', lands today — and it has immediately split viewers between admiring Dame Kristin Scott Thomas's warmly comic performance and bristling at the "absolute brats" of grandchildren who shake their cards hoping for cash. The three-minute film, set to Sam Fender's cover of the Rolling Stones' 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', ends with Gloria transforming her study into a disco-lit 'Gran Cave' for the children to enjoy together.
Paul Whitehouse voices Pickles the talking wooden dog, who goads Gloria into her gifting mission with the line: 'You can do better than cash.'
Mick Jagger endorsed Fender's reworking, saying 'I was pleased to hear he was covering one of my songs — I think he's done a great job with it.'
Rivals aren't waiting: Lidl has fired back with Shaun Williamson — Barry from EastEnders — leading a singalong reworking of Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody' alongside Chris Kamara.
