The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment and kills around half of those it infects, leaving health officials racing to contain a virus spreading faster than tracking efforts can keep up with.

The WHO has warned the outbreak is on track to surpass the 11,000 deaths recorded in the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic.

A Congolese doctor fell ill mid-flight from the DRC to France and was quarantined on arrival, exposing how close the virus is to major European cities.
