Christine Lagarde, 70, will leave the European Central Bank presidency on February 7, stepping down nine months before her eight-year term was due to expire in October 2027. Her exit triggers one of the biggest leadership reshuffles in the ECB's 28-year history at a moment when the eurozone faces both weak growth and a resurgence in inflationary pressures.

The Dutch government is backing former central bank governor Klaas Knot as successor, while Spain is pushing Pablo Hernández de Cos of the Bank for International Settlements.
