Edward 'Buddy' Jackson identified as Lake Mead barrel victim in shooting with "earmarks of a mob hit," cracking a 40-year cold case
Las Vegas police prepare to brief the public on the Lake Mead barrel victim, whose gunshot wound to the back of the head placed his mob-style killing in the late 1970s to early 1980s.
Las Vegas investigators have named the man found shot dead in a barrel on Lake Mead in 2022 as Edward Lelburian Jackson, an Arkansas native known as "Buddy," with authorities describing the killing as bearing the "earmarks of a mob hit" after advanced genealogy profiling cracked the case more than four decades on. Jackson was shot once in the head and is believed to have been killed in the early 1980s, based on his clothing and family interviews.
Jackson's barrel had lain hidden beneath Lake Mead's surface for decades until receding water levels exposed it to boaters in 2022.
Jackson's family never reported him missing, telling police he "would show up when he showed up" — they simply assumed he was still travelling the country.
