Egyptian authorities have swept up all six journalists from Matsadaash, one of Egypt's few remaining independent media outlets, accusing them of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and producing fabricated news for foreign funding. Co-founder Abdelrahman Mansour, speaking from outside Egypt, rejected the allegations outright. Egypt is already ranked among the world's worst jailers of journalists, with 26 now behind bars.
Matsadaash — Arabic for 'Don't Believe' — was founded eight years ago as a fact-checking platform before expanding into investigative reporting.
International and regional rights groups called the arrests 'an alarming escalation on independent media and freedom of expression.'
Two Matsadaash editors were arrested in 2023 but released without charge after investigators found no Muslim Brotherhood links.
