Eleven people are feared killed by sharks after a suspected smuggling boat capsized off Mexico and survivors were found bitten

Mexico's consulate in San Diego confirmed on Monday that all 16 survivors held Mexican nationality. The vessel had been travelling along a corridor routinely associated with illegal maritime smuggling, according to the US Coast Guard. Capt. Joseph Meuse said 'human traffickers have zero regard for human life'. Search crews called off operations on Sunday having scoured over 2,441 square miles of the Pacific.

Twenty-seven people entered the water roughly 140 miles off the coast of Ensenada early Friday.

Survivors clung 'to each other, to debris' before divers rappelled down from helicopters.

Federal agents intercepted another boat carrying 14 suspected illegal migrants off Newport Harbor on October 3.
