Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Elizabeth Debicki, 36, will make her Royal Shakespeare Company debut in a gender-swapped production of Richard II, running at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre from 10 April to 22 May 2027. The Australian actress, best known for playing Diana, Princess of Wales in 'The Crown', takes on a role previously performed by David Tennant, Sir Derek Jacobi and Jeremy Irons. Director Daniel Raggett returns to the RSC for a third time, with the production forming part of the company's newly announced 2027 summer season.
No woman has played Richard II in the RSC's entire history — Debicki breaks the mould in her very first appearance with the company.
Co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey praised Debicki's ability to match 'immense vulnerability with deep courage' in the demanding lead role.
