Elon Musk dumps $158 million into the Texas Senate race to rescue Ken Paxton's struggling bid against James Talarico

Federal filings released on Thursday show Elon Musk gave $75 million on 9 September and $83 million two weeks later to the Senate Leadership Fund. Each sum went to the pro-Paxton Texas PAC within a day or two. President Donald Trump said 'weak and ineffective political hacks', including John Cornyn and Karl Rove, would be to blame if Paxton lost. An InsiderAdvantage poll now puts Paxton one point ahead.

Talarico told a packed rally 'You are my slingshot' and cast the race as David versus Goliath.

Talarico raised $64 million in the third quarter, outpacing Paxton's own campaign.

Musk's cash appears to be the most a single donor has spent on a non-presidential candidate.
