Altai, the five-year-old Amur tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park whose fatal mauling of a man in his 20s on Saturday has shocked witnesses, has been confirmed by the park as "safe and well" and will not be euthanised.Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where Altai the Amur tiger is confirmed safe and will not be euthanised, remains closed for a third consecutive day as South Yorkshire Police continue their enquiries.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that Altai, a rare Amur tiger, is "safe and well" and will not be put down after fatally attacking a man who entered his enclosure near Doncaster on Saturday. The park closed on Sunday as staff affected by the tragedy received specialist support. A witness told a newspaper they saw the victim dancing on a bridge near the enclosure roughly 20 minutes before the attack, apparently trying to interact with the animal.
Altai, an endangered Siberian tiger — one of the world's largest big cats — made the 1,135-mile journey from Dyreparken zoo in Norway to join the park in March 2025.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed that paramedics could not save the man, who died at the scene, and that specialist officers are with his family.
The park said it had been contacted by 'many, many people' concerned about the tiger's fate, and moved to reassure them directly in its Sunday statement.
