England's oldest pub is finally named as a Somerset inn after experts study tree rings in its timber frame

The George Inn at Norton St Philip was built in the late 14th century by the Carthusian monks of nearby Hinton Priory to house merchants visiting their markets and fairs. Historic England says it has been serving customers continuously for more than 600 years. Building archaeologist Dr James Wright dated its timber work to between 1430 and 1432. He says most rival claims to the title are 'myths'.

Guinness World Records stopped awarding the oldest-pub title in 2000 because the row was so fierce.

Dr Wright says the monks set up the inn as a 'savvy money-making exercise'.

'We're not guessing at its age,' Dr Wright said, calling the inn 'a national treasure'.
