Enraged half-tonne bull named Malacara clears safety barrier and flies into crowd at Spanish bullfighting arena

A six-year-old, 508kg bull named Malacara cleared the safety barrier at the Plaza de Toros de Murcia on Saturday, landing among terrified front-row spectators. Witnesses said only the concrete wall separating those seats from the ring prevented the animal's horns — which came within inches of the crowd — from causing serious injury.

Eyewitness Juan Perez said: 'The animal was out-of-control — it was extremely lucky that nobody was injured.'

Before vaulting the barrier at speed and sending spectators fleeing in panic, the bull had turned away from a matador who was sheltering against the fence.

Malacara was herded back onto the sand after the escape and subsequently killed in the traditional manner by bullfighter Duarte Fernandes.
